Bitcoin today: about 80,800 dollars, a 1.6 trillion dollar market value and what has changed since the last halving

On 27 October 2026 bitcoin traded near 80,800 dollars, about 36% below its record. Price, market value, supply, mining and demand two and a half years after the April 2024 halving.

On 27 October 2026 bitcoin traded at about 80,816 dollars, according to CoinGecko data at 22:16 UTC, up about 1.2% over 24 hours. At that price the roughly 20.10 million coins in circulation had a market value of about 1,625 billion dollars. That is about 59.5% of the value of the whole crypto market, which CoinGecko put at about 2,724 billion dollars on the same day. Ether, the second largest asset, accounted for about 10.5%. Bitcoin's share of the market is often used as a gauge of how much investors favour it over other tokens.

The price is well below the peak. Bitcoin set its record of 126,080 dollars on 6 October 2025, according to CoinGecko, so on 27 October 2026 it stood about 36% lower. It was also about 7.7% below its level on 1 January 2026, when CoinGecko recorded about 87,575 dollars, and about 29% below its price a year earlier, about 114,419 dollars on 27 October 2025.

What the halving changed. The fourth halving took place at block 840,000, mined on 20 April 2024, according to mempool.space. From that block the reward paid to miners for each new block fell from 6.25 to 3.125 bitcoin. With a block about every ten minutes, or about 144 a day, new issuance dropped from roughly 900 to roughly 450 bitcoin a day. Over a year that is about 164,000 bitcoin, less than 1% of the coins already in circulation.

The supply schedule is now close to its end. On 27 October 2026 about 20.10 million of the 21 million bitcoin that will ever exist had been issued, about 95.7%, according to CoinGecko. The chain stood at block 973,464 on mempool.space. The next halving is due at block 1,050,000, about 76,500 blocks away. At the ten-minute target that points to around spring 2028, an estimate that depends on actual block times.

Mining has become more competitive, not less. mempool.space put the average network hashrate, the computing power used to secure the chain, at about 642 exahashes per second on 20 April 2024 and about 1,089 exahashes per second on 27 October 2026, about 70% higher. On the same day the site estimated that mining difficulty would rise by about 6.7% at the next adjustment. More computing power chasing half the reward squeezes margins, which is why many listed miners also run data centres or hold part of their output. MARA Holdings held 35,577 bitcoin, CleanSpark 13,530 and Riot Platforms 11,380 on 27 October 2026, according to BitcoinTreasuries.NET.

Who buys bitcoin has also changed. US spot bitcoin ETFs, launched in January 2024, had total net assets of about 103 billion dollars and cumulative net inflows of about 57.3 billion dollars on 26 October 2026, according to TFTC, which compiles SoSoValue and issuer data. At the end of June 2026 these funds held about 1.21 million bitcoin, according to an analysis of 13F filings reported by Crypto Briefing on 19 August 2026, more than seven years of issuance at the current pace. Public companies held about 1.296 million bitcoin on 27 October 2026, according to BitcoinTreasuries.NET.

In October the flows pointed both ways. According to TFTC data, US spot bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows of about 202 million dollars between 1 and 26 October 2026. The swings were large: 528.4 million dollars came in on 21 October and 635.5 million dollars went out on 22 October. On 26 October the funds took in 110.3 million dollars, all of it in BlackRock's IBIT.

What it means. A halving cuts new supply on a fixed schedule, but it does not set the price. Since April 2024 bitcoin has climbed to a record and then given back about a third of its value, while supply grew by less than 1% a year. Demand from funds, companies and individuals, together with the general appetite for risk, has done most of the moving. The figures worth following are ETF flows, purchases by companies and the behaviour of miners around the next difficulty adjustments.
